The electronic steering lock that Mercedes has installed in a wide variety of their vehicles has become a very well-known sore spot for owners.

This simple theft prevention device fails and fails often, and when it does it can leave you with a stranded vehicle and a huge repair bill. If your ignition or steering lock are starting to go bad you should replace them right away, before they leave you stranded and while replacing them is still easy.

While the dealership can charge thousands of dollars for replacing this unit you can do the work yourself and save some serious money. The most difficult part of the job is that you will be working blind on one nut but the article will walk you through everything so you will be fine.

Make sure that the very first thing you do is install the key in the ignition and that it frees up the electronic steering lock. Then leave the key in even though you are disconnecting the battery. If the lock is not open when you start you will not be able to remove it from the steering column.

PLEASE NOTE: We no longer sell these parts. They are considered Theft Relevant Parts (TRP). You must now buy them through a MBZ dealership service dept where installation and programming is required by an authorized MBZ mechanic.

i have a 2010 mercedes c300, i was driving the other day and my battery light came on, a little after that all the lights on my dashboard started to show up and the ac and windshield wipers stopped working, when i got home i turned off the car but as i was locking it my horn started going off automatically and it wouldn’t stop for 5 minutes until the horn died off, could this be the alternator?

      Followup from the Pelican Staff:

Hi, Can you leave the ESL unit in the column, in the unlocked state? In other words, put the key in unlocking the column disconnect the battery, disconnect the ESL multiplug, and connect that plug into a coded emulator, then re-connect the battery?
Mine hasn't failed yet, so wondering about going the emulator route, pre-emptively. In case of MOT test in the UK, I could always re-connect the ESL steering lock is a checked item. Also I suppose it's the lazy way to disable the ESL, without the reach around to remove the unit.

When I went to leave the car wouldn’t start, none of the buttons on the key works no more and when I turn to key to fire the car up nothing happens, can someone tell me if it’s the ESL or key please before I make purchases

My Mercedes C250 2012 was diagnosed by Mercedes dealer as need to replace the electronic shift lock. I am assuming they meant electronic steering lock. Anyway, I am wondering how many labor hours should this replacement take for the Mercedes dealer technician. My warranty company says that only will pay for 2 hours labor but the dealer says it should take 6 hours and if I decide to accept for them to replace it then they want to charge me the 4 hours that won't be paid by warranty company.

The ESL unit can be removed without removing the cluster and the steering wheel... IF the wheel is unlocked. It can be accessed from underneath, removing under dash panel 3 torx screws, then removing the 2 rear reverse torx bolts the hold the steering column, and loosening the front two. Removing the nut 13mm wrench that holds the ESL is a blind procedure, but easy enough to feel. Can be done in 15 minutes if you've done it before; maybe an hour for first-timers. Lots of YouTube videos available.
Once you have the ESL out, you can replace just the motor, and not have to get anything reprogrammed.
If your ESL failed with the steering wheel locked, that's a whole other story.

This might be dumb to ask. But is it possible if I always have one key inserted in the car and I lock the door using the spear? So the ESL won’t have to lock and I can always ignite the engine? I have a garage so I’m not worry someone would steal my car.

My wifes car 2012 c250 she went to the shops and it wouldnt start. I went down and the dash lights came on with no errors but wouldnt crank, plus it was stuck in park. Google said to take the gear stuck insert out and I was able to push the yellow button and move the gear stick in and out of park. Pulled the key out and in again and it started. I got her to drive to local Mecedes for them to link it up for error codes. Next day they got back to us saying it was the ESL which to replace is common and will fix it. Quote $1,600 for the parts and $800 for labour. I'm not a mechanic so just have to trust them I suppose. Anyone had similar Nic?

What a morning......engine won't start...no radio, etc. Thought it was dead battery but it is only just over a year since replaced. Jump start fails 🤔.
Called my MB service guy and he diagnoses symptoms to be a faulty ELS which shuts down car starting as a safety precaution.
Turned the steering wheel left and right to lock points and ESL probably repositioned itself....car started on next try.

On diagnostic I get the following faulty codes:
A25408 - electric steering lock is faulty
      A25464

Does that mean I have to replace ESL? Can any mechanic do it if I get the part I know nothing about cars, and definitely can't do it by myself. Also, would it needs reprogramming once installed.

Hi Nick. I have a 2010 mercedes W212 250cdi. Car won't start from one moment to the other. The ESL is luckily in unlocked position. Putting the key into the EIS the instrument panel and the cluster do not light up, only the center speedo dial. Radio works, hazzard works. Unlocking and locking vehicle works. All other electrics do not work. Batterie is ok, fuses are also ok. Do you think it could be the ESL or the EIS. If the little motor in the ESL unit is broken and I put in a new motor do one need to reprogram ? I saw your video and know how to take out the ESL.

My 2008 c350 was having ESL/EIS issues. I took out my ignition switch with keyfob and ESL module and sent it to a service I purchased on EBay for $400 USD. Again, I am sorry to bother. They said that modules under the hood are bad Front SAM modules. They didnt get wet at all, there was just some water under the passenger seat. Are you saying that modules which failed from water damage somewhere else are non-repairable, or just ones that had direct contact with water? And also do you have any idea if I was to buy new SAMs on ebay, how much would a certified shop charge to program them? Thanks on your replies, I appreciate it!

Well just brought it back from certifies Merceds shop. Supposedly some water got in the passenger side of the car and fried the electronics. Thats all they had to say for $150 diagnostics. They also said I would have to replace all of the elctronics starting with front SAM modules and just those would be $3000.00. Do SAM modules have to be programmed/coded? Are they really not fixable?

Hi Nick. I just purchased 08 C300. I started the car only twice before buying it. Battery was completely dead but with jump, car started fine both times. Drove home, hooked up OBD tool any got some misfire codes, plus “lost communication to fuel pump” & “low fuel pressure” codes.
Now, this is when it starts getting funny. I decided to put in a good working battery. Got the bad one out, put a new one in, try to start it, nothing. No crank no nothing. IC works fine and has all the lights come on, radio works, AC works, windows, sunroof, everything except starting the car.
I started freaking out and I unhooked this battery for few mins, jumped the car directly on the terminals no battery, and it started. After that I tried to start it about 100 times on 100 different ways and I get nothing. Battery is showing 12.38V. My wheel isnt locked, nor is the key. I can turn the wheel around and I can turn the key all the way to start position. What should I be looking in to first?

Hey, Just realised that you suggested in Figure 3 to remove the gauge cluster for some reason. To be honest, you don't need to. You just need to remove the plastic trim around the gauge cluster, that's all. You can remove the whole steering shaft with the cluster in position, in case you have ESL in LOCKED position. Hope this helps.

Just wanted to add to my previous comment some VERY helpful information to ALL sufferers of ESL failure. Nowadays, if the ESL failed in UNLOCKED position you can do very simple DIY and get your car running in about 30 mins. All you need is a good quality ESL emulator which can be connected to the main cables and be placed just on top of your plastic trim under the steering wheel. So, basically you do up to Figure 2 from this article and then you disconnect the cable to ESL and connect the Emulator. All done! You do not need to remove your old ESL from the shaft. You bury it forever there! It does no job, you disconnected all the cables, so its basically there but it doesn't do any job. The emulator will do all the job now, and it has moving parts! It will last forever!!!

Be aware, you need to program emulator to talk to EIS obviously.

Hope this helps. Sorry for my English, I'm from Ukraine.

Great information, ... but Why would you need to remove the steering wheel and the steering column? I really do not understand. If the ESL is in UNLOCKED position this is really important you do not need to remove the steering lock and the column. All work can be done in 20 minutes. From Figure 2 you can just jump to Figure 6 step and unscrew two screws by the steering knuckle. It would give you more room to remove the ESL. That's all you need to remove the ESL and yes, obviously you need to remove the 13mm nut from ESL. Very simple method. I really do not understand why would you want to remove the steering wheel and the column? If the ESL is locked and cannot be unlocked you need to remove/unscrew one bolt on the steering knuckle connection and remove the whole steering shaft. After that you can remove locked ESL from the shaft.

Sorry about my English, I'm from Ukraine. You do provide great info, but I think it can be done much easier.

have 2009 Mercedes C 300 when I turn the key on all the dash lights illuminate but it does not engage the starter I checked the fuses and all of them are good although 22 thru 25 have no power with the key on. The starter can be bypassed with a screwdriver but the car doesn’t start up. There is no voltage at the starter from signal wire. Previously the car was able to start using a screwdriver to activate the starter. The battery is literally brand new,the key fob locks and unlocks the car the windows all work as well as the ac/radio, the wheel unlocks. the fuel pump primes, dash lights illuminate , i’m able to move the transmission into gear when pressing the brake. All fuses have power except for 22-25 which the manual says are for engine electronics. I guess what I’m wondering is where are those fuses drawing their power supply from? Is there any other things that could be causing just those Fuses to not get any power? Any help of any kind is greatly appreciated. found a 40 amp maxi fuse that was blown in front compartment, fuse was replaced and the car started uyp fine. car was turned off to button everything up and it wouldnt start again using the key. all problems still existed , only the fuse that was previously blown was now good. please help

Some times it activates all the outputs the engine starts, but only turn off if remove completly the key from the ezs. Hi Nick, I've reading your post and find it very useful fro me. I'm using c-class 2013 w204 facelift. My problem is,
When I Put in the key in ignition slot and try to turn start, but no engine lights come up. Engine wouldn't start and the dashboard only showing the mileage info. Steering was lock as well. So I've called an authorized Mercedes Benz engineer come to my place and diagnose the issue using the Xentry device. And it say Diagnosis N73 -Electronic Ignition Lock EZS "Replace Components N26/5 Eletric Sterring Lock Control Unit" as attached photo. So my question is, is't true that I just need to replace this N26/5 component and no reprogramming needed on this component and my key? Is this component still available if I would like to order from you?

Good day, I've got a 2007 C220 CDI. I also have a problem, or think it might be the ESL electronic steering lock Happened now three or four times that it wouldn't unlock to switch on the car when trying to start. It would't start since yesterday. This morning I thought to test the car's battery, the volts was at 12.17volts. I charged the battery for about 5 hours. After charging the volts were at 13.10 but slowly dropped to settle at 12.58volts. I connected the battery, and here is where the confusion starts. The first time I put the key in nothing happened, but when I tried a second time "whalla" it worked. I tried it five times and worked every time. Do you think it is the cars battery that is going original battery or should I be worried about the ESL that is going??? I'll appreciate your advise? Regards Henri.

In what type of components does this part fall on?

      Followup from the Pelican Staff:

The steering lock fails. The most difficult part of the job is that you will be working blind on one nut but the article will walk you through everything so you will be fine.Make sure that the very first thing you do is install the key in the ignition and that it frees up the electronic steering lock. Then leave the key in even though you are disconnecting the battery. If the lock is not open when you start you will not be able to remove it from the steering column.- Nick at Pelican Parts

I'm working through this same problem with the ESL module. One question I do have relative to this tutorial but also applies to other tutorials I've read on the W204 is I don't see any torque specifications provided in the steps only reassemble in reverse order. Now there may be some nuts/bolts that do not have critical torque values but hardware that secures the steering wheel and column are more important than the screws that hold the under-body tray.

There are two possible causes as to why a key may not be recognized. Either the key needs to be reprogrammed, or the Electronic Ignition switch which is the part that actually authenticates the key, allowes ESL to unlock the steering wheel and then continues through with activating other circuits and procedures to finally allowing for the engine starting procedure.

Diagnosing which of those issues is causing the key not to be recognized can ony be poperly diagnosed by using Mercedes Benz's proprietary STAR diagnostic system... Only authorized MB dealers and some independent repair shops who have invested in the equipment and the cost to subscribe to the STAR program can do so.

It should be noted that if the steering wheel will not unlock, that does not necessarily mean that the steering wheel lock is faulty. Especially if that happens in conjunction with the key not being recognized in which case, it is possible that the Electronic Ignition Swith is faulty and is unable to authenticate the key. So it displays the message indicating the key is not recognized but it also fails to issue the command to acivate the process of unlocking the steering wheel.

STAR is not the only tool that can be used to diagnose. Autologic makes dealer level tools that work as well. Thanks for the additional info. We appreciate it. - Nick at Pelican Parts

So what would be the best thing to do in that case? Just reprogram the key? I can turn my key in the ignition but the steering wheel stays locked and no power goes thru at all when i turn the key.
      Thanks

I'm confused about the need to order new keys your comment in reply to Mac on January 10, 2016...

1Are the cost for ordering new keys included in the $290 "Tab price" as indicated at the top of this article?

2 Also, if the job of EIS is to properly identify the SmartKey as being the actual key for the vehicle, then send a signal to ESL to unlock the steering wheel, then why would you need to replace keys when replacing ESL?

      Followup from the Pelican Staff:

key cost is not included. You would need keys if they are faulty. If only replacing the unit, the old keys will work. - Nick at Pelican Parts
