Mike, South Africa: As Tim (12:49) said, there is so much to fix at United the fans will be happy seeing improvement...as low as that sets the bar! I think Arsenal take the title this season, with Liverpool possibly a bigger threat than City. United an outside shot at fourth.

In short, no. This is what he said when first asked about the role, since confirming that there has been no formal contact from the Football Association.

"For me, as long as I am happy and feel supported and feel free to do the work that I love to do at Newcastle, I’ll be very happy and I am very happy.

"It is an unbelievable football club. There has been no thought in my mind on anything else and I have been very committed to the job here."

Howe has always spoken publicly about his love of coaching "day to day", which is something he would have to give up if he were to replace Gareth Southgate.

He is also extremely settled in the North East with his family; it might be hard to prise him away, even if compensation could be agreed. Eales confirmed Howe signed a new multi-year contract last summer, which was not formally announced.

England talk won’t derail Howe’s focus. He is intense on every detail and as he said, that won’t waver; it is irrelevant until an offer is made, and that is not imminent after Lee Carsley was confirmed as interim boss.

I can see him getting the job permanently. There are obviously better qualified contenders out there, like Eddie Howe at Newcastle United. He (Howe) can deal with big egos, he can deal with the scrutiny but the thing that Carsley will really have to step up and cope with is not so much the tactical side or the management side. He's brilliant with that. He's such a compassionate individual.

But what he has to do is deal with the scrutiny that is 10 times what he has had to deal with before and the questions that me and you throw at him won't be about headers and volly's. It will be about political, social and economical issues.

  6. 'It's not a huge surprise'published at 14:32 British Summer Time 12 August

At the moment if you look around at world football, if you look at de la Fuente with Spain at the Euros and Scaloni with Argentina, both of them stepped up from the under 21s and 23s. Obviously Gareth Southgate stepped up from the under 21s, so it's not a huge surprise.

National Associations are looking for individuals who understand the dna of the age group and players that they have worked with. Lee Carsley has worked with the under 21s last year, and I think the FA would of looked at that and saw how he has produced a winning team in every sense of the way. They won the Euros, they played fantastic football without conceding a goal. They played such attacking front foot football.

If you look at some of the players that played in that Under 23 final that beat Spain. The midfield had Cole Palmer, Angel Gomes, Curtis Jones, Emile Smith-Rowe, Morgan Gibbs-White and Anthony Gordon. This is something that the English fans from the senior team have always wanted. They want a bolder confident England team because England was a little bit too static under Southgate at key moments during the Euros.

  7. What to expect from England's new interim bosspublished at 14:29 British Summer Time 12 August

    14:29 BST 12 August

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Lee Carsley was announced as the new England interim boss last Friday, as the FA continue to search for a permanent replacement for Gareth Southgate.

Carsley is set to take charge for the upcoming Nations Leagues games.

Earlier today journalist Henry Winter spoke to 5 Live about what we can expect from a Carsley team and the direction of international football. Let's see what he had to say...

  9. Kilmarnock's Wright red carded after 16 minutespublished at 14:25 British Summer Time 12 August

    14:25 BST 12 August

    Kilmarnock 0-3 St Johnstone

An Adama Sidibeh double helped St Johnstone coast past 10-man Kilmarnock at Rugby Park to pick up their first win of the new Premiership season.

Sidibeh's strikes sandwiched Joe Wright's red card, as the defender was sent off after two yellows in the opening 16 minutes.

It got worse for Kilmarnock in the second half when they were denied a penalty before conceding one two minutes later, with Benjamin Kimpioka converting.

After last week's heavy defeat to Celtic, Kilmarnock sit bottom of the table after two games, having conceded seven goals.

St Johnstone, meanwhile, sit in fifth.

Can’t help but be excited about the West Ham squad after Tim Steidten’s mad summer of fun…we needed an overhaul and we got that and then some. With a decent defence, left-midfield sorted, and Fullkrug getting amongst it up front; fortune’s always hiding, but hopefully a cup and Europe shouldn’t be too much to ask?

BBC Sport's Simon Stone: I am not going against Pep Guardiola. It is a truism with youth players that they have the power to make it impossible to ignore them through the excellence of their performance.

The 19-year-old O'Reilly did just that against Barcelona in Florida. And while a number of senior stars are yet to return to training after the Euros and Copa America, O’Reilly’s performance against the manager's former club is bound to stick with Guardiola.

As a midfielder, he knows a regular first-team slot is impossible for now given Rodri's presence. But he may get opportunities from the bench, especially after another impressive display in the Community Shield win against Manchester United.

As a Chelsea fan I would love it if the Felix/Gallagher deal fell apart. Signing an overrated and overpaid player while losing an underrated academy graduate would be terrible business. Happy to show up the owners too.

BBC Sport's Alex Howell: It's quite remarkable that Adam Wharton only made his Premier League debut in February of this year.

His impressive performances in a short space of time earned him a place in the England squad that reached the final of Euro 2024.

Sources at Crystal Palace believe that the 20-year-old is their best signing from the Championship - that is high praise considering Michael Olise came that way and has just secured a move to European giants Bayern Munich.

England manager Gareth Southgate said the national team had been missing a player like Wharton for "seven or eight years".

If Wharton continues to flourish like he did in his first few months in the Premier League, a move to one of the division's top sides could not be far away.

United really should consider signing Monaco's Youssouf Fofana. A true box to box man that would significantly improve our midfield but also add depth if we don't sell anyone else. Fofana, Casemiro, Mainoo in midfield. It would unleash Mainoo. Can't wait for the season to start.

BBC Sport's Simon Stone: Arsenal [where Obi-Martin played for the last two years] believe they made a fair offer to the 16-year-old forward, who has represented both England and Denmark at youth level. But he has decided to join Manchester United.

The reasons for this will be debated but Obi-Martin has proved himself to be lethal in youth ranks – he scored 10 goals in a single game against Liverpool Under-16s when he was 15.

It will be fascinating to see how quickly he develops and whether he gets a chance in the EFL Trophy and Uefa Youth League. If he does well there, might we see him on the United first-team bench at some point?

He caught a lot of media attention after a few appearances last season, but as a Liverpool fan I'm very excited to see what the future holds for Jayden Danns - looks a splendid footballer. Dark horse to replace Kane/Watkins as England's number nine as early as the 2026 World Cup? Maybe...

BBC Sport's Nizaar Kinsella: The 17-year-old midfielder has caught the eye of new manager Arne Slot during pre-season. He excelled in a friendly against Real Betis, which saw him singled out for praise by a manager who is usually reluctant to do so. Nyoni joined Liverpool from Leicester last summer.

Former Republic of Ireland interim boss and ex-Manchester United defender John O'Shea will stay on as his country's new assistant coach.

O'Shea took charge of the team for four friendly fixtures this year following Stephen Kenny's departure in November.

Having initially been expected to be in charge only for games against Belgium and Switzerland in March, the prolonged managerial search before Heimir Hallgrimsson's surprise appointment last month saw O'Shea remain in the dug-out for the June double-header with Hungary and Portugal.

Hallgrimsson says it was an "absolute priority" to keep the former defender in his coaching set-up.

As an Arsenal optimist slowly turning pessimist as I work my way through my mid-20s, I fear we’ve missed our chance in the last two seasons. Frustratingly didn’t do much wrong, but it’s hard to compete with a juggernaut like City. Aim for 90+ points and pray.

BBC Sport's Alex Howell: There's been a lot of expectation around the development of Nwaneri since he became the youngest player in Premier League history when he made his debut for Arsenal in the 2022-23 season, aged just 15 years and 181 days.

Now 17, Nwaneri made just one appearance last season in the Premier League - against West Ham - but hopes remain high for the midfielder.

He started the Gunners' pre-season friendly against Manchester United in the United States and provided an assist for Gabriel Jesus as Arsenal went on to win the match.

Manager Mikel Arteta has said that Nwaneri and the rest of the young players' futures are in their own hands and they should "show what you can do" in pre-season.

If Nwaneri carries on how he has done so far, there's a chance he will be getting more minutes this season.
