OPENAI
OpenAI Co-founder Quits to Join Rival Anthropic
John Schulman shared his decision on X, highlighting his wish to focus more on AI alignment and hands-on technical work.
Details:
Schulman was instrumental in creating ChatGPT by leading OpenAI’s reinforcement training efforts.
Following the departure of AI safety researcher Jan Leike, Schulman took over OpenAI’s alignment science efforts and was a member of the company’s safety committee. His departure leaves a significant vacancy, and it remains unclear who will succeed him in these roles.
Schulman stated that his decision was personal and not due to a lack of support from OpenAI. He praised the company’s commitment to AI alignment research and expressed confidence in its future success without him.

Additionally, OpenAI President and Co-founder Greg Brockman is taking an extended leave through the end of the year to "relax and recharge" after nine years with the company. The startup will need to adapt quickly to these leadership changes, as other tech giants like Meta and Google have increased their efforts to take the top spot in AI.

ELON MUSK VS OPENAI
Elon Musk Revives Legal Battle Against OpenAI and Sam Altman
Elon Musk has reignited his legal dispute with OpenAI, targeting the company and its founders, Sam Altman and Greg Brockman. Musk alleges that the ChatGPT creator has deviated from its original mission to develop AI for the benefit of humanity.
Details:
The revived lawsuit was filed in federal court in Northern California on Monday, accusing Altman and Brockman of manipulating him into co-founding OpenAI under false pretenses.
The suit argues that assurances regarding OpenAI’s nonprofit structure were deceptive, serving as a “hook for Altman’s long con.”
Musk had previously withdrawn a similar lawsuit in June without explanation, which also claimed OpenAI breached its founding agreement to keep its technology open source.
Musk’s lawyer, Marc Toberoff, described the new lawsuit as “more forceful”, accusing OpenAI of breaking federal racketeering laws in a conspiracy to defraud Musk.
It is unclear whether this new lawsuit will be more effective than the previous one, given its similarities. Still, together with the leadership changes, this marks a very eventful day for OpenAI, which now has a lot of extra work to do.
